Terms of use
Last updated: 12.10.2026
These terms govern the use of the Chapterkeep app. By signing in, you agree to them.
1. Provider and scope
The provider of the Chapterkeep app is the operator named in the section "Contact" and in the imprint ("we"). These terms apply to the use of the app on iOS and Android and the related services. Deviating terms of users do not apply.
2. Services
Chapterkeep is a service for keeping your own notes on books. The basic features are free, additional features come with the paid Chapterkeep Premium subscription. Chapterkeep includes in particular:
- a library with reading status and reading progress
- searching for books via Open Library and a barcode scanner for the ISBN
- notes for each chapter, a list of characters and a recap from your notes
- synchronizing your data between your devices
We continuously develop Chapterkeep and may change, add or discontinue features as far as this is reasonable for you. We strive for high availability but cannot guarantee uninterrupted access, e.g. during maintenance or outages. Your entries are first stored on your device, so you can also use the app without an internet connection.
3. Chapterkeep Premium
With the paid Chapterkeep Premium subscription you can use additional features, currently exporting your books with notes and characters as PDF or Markdown. Which features are included, how long the subscription runs and what it costs is shown in the app before you buy. All other features remain free.
You buy Premium through Apple's App Store or Google Play. Payment, billing and refunds are handled by the respective store under its terms; that is also where you request a refund. Whether and how you can exercise a statutory right of withdrawal is also governed by the terms of the store. Prices include the statutory VAT.
The subscription renews automatically for the chosen period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the period ends. If the store offers a free trial, it turns into the paid subscription unless you cancel. You cancel in the subscription settings of your Apple or Google account, also via Settings → Chapterkeep Premium → Manage subscription. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel the subscription.
Premium applies to your Chapterkeep account on all of your devices. When the subscription ends, the Premium features are locked again; your data is kept. On a new device, you restore a purchase with "Restore purchases" if you are signed in with the same Apple or Google account there.
4. Account and minimum age
You need an account to use the app. You can create a guest account or sign in with a link sent by email, with Google or – on the iPhone – with Apple. You must be at least 16 years old.
A guest account is tied to your device. As long as you do not link a sign-in method, your data is lost when you sign out, delete the app or switch devices.
Protect access to your account, i.e. to your email inbox or your Google or Apple account, and let us know if you suspect misuse.
5. Book data
Book details and cover images partly come from the free, community-maintained database Open Library and partly from you. They may be incomplete, outdated or wrong. We do not check them and do not guarantee their accuracy. You can change the details of your books yourself at any time.
6. Permitted use
You may only use Chapterkeep for private, non-commercial purposes and in accordance with applicable law. In particular, you may not:
- disrupt or overload the app or our servers or circumvent security measures
- read out data automatically (e.g. by scraping) or access other users' data
- modify, reverse engineer or resell the app, unless permitted by law
- enter unlawful content or use the app to copy copyrighted texts on a large scale
7. Rights to the app and to your notes
For the duration of the user agreement, we grant you a simple, non-transferable right to use Chapterkeep on your devices. The app and its content, such as texts, graphics and the logo, are protected by copyright.
Your notes, characters and other entries belong to you. We only use them to provide the app to you, as described in the privacy policy. Only you can see them.
8. Liability
We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for damage resulting from injury to life, body or health based on a negligent or intentional breach of duty, and under the German Product Liability Act.
For the free features, we are otherwise not liable for slight negligence, since we provide them free of charge. For Chapterkeep Premium, we are only liable for slight negligence if we breach an essential contractual obligation, i.e. an obligation whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the agreement possible in the first place and on whose compliance you may regularly rely; liability is then limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this type of contract. This also applies to our vicarious agents. Please keep in mind that data can be lost despite synchronization, e.g. with a guest account after signing out.
9. Term and termination
The user agreement runs for an indefinite period. You can end it at any time by deleting your account in the app under Settings → Profile → Delete account. All your data is then deleted. You cancel a running Premium subscription separately in the store (section "Chapterkeep Premium").
We can end the agreement with four weeks' notice, e.g. if we discontinue Chapterkeep, and will inform you in good time so you can save your notes. If you have already paid for Premium for the time after the agreement ends, we refund you the pro-rata amount. In case of serious violations of these terms, we can also block or delete your account without notice.
10. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms if there is a valid reason, e.g. new features or a change in the law. We will inform you about changes in the app. They only apply to you once you agree to them. If you do not agree, either side can end the agreement.
11. Data protection
You can find out how we process your data in the privacy policy, which you find in the app under Settings → Data privacy.
12. Final provisions
The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies. If you are a consumer, this choice of law only applies as far as it does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory provisions of the country in which you have your habitual residence.
We are neither willing nor obliged to participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.
Should any provision of these terms be invalid, the remaining provisions remain valid.
