Getting started

What is Chapterkeep for?

Chapterkeep is your memory for reading. After a chapter you write down a few sentences in your own words, keep characters, places and terms in the lexicon and collect quotes. When you pick a book up again after a break, the recap shows you the story so far – only up to your chapter.

How can I sign in?

You can sign in with a link sent by email, with Google or – on the iPhone – with Apple. Or you use Chapterkeep as a guest without giving any contact details. You don't need a password.

What is a guest account and how do I back it up?

As a guest, your books and notes are tied to this installation: if you sign out or delete the app, they are lost. So back up your account in the settings under "Profile" with Google, Apple or your email address. After that you sign in with it and all your notes stay.

Does Chapterkeep work offline?

Yes. Everything you write is saved on your device first, so you can carry on on a plane or without reception. As soon as you're online again, it syncs automatically. Only the book search needs a connection.

Can I use Chapterkeep on several devices?

Yes, once your account is backed up: sign in on the second device with the same method. Your books, notes, quotes and flash cards are then synced between the devices.

Books and notes

How do I add a book?

Tap "Add book" in the library and search by title, author or ISBN, or scan the barcode on the back. If the search doesn't know a book, you can enter it manually.

How do I write notes on a chapter?

Open the book and tap "Write notes" on the "Chapters" tab. Chapterkeep suggests the next chapter. A few sentences are enough – ideally right after reading, while it's fresh.

Can I dictate notes?

Yes. Tap the microphone in the note editor and speak; the recognized text goes into your note. Chapterkeep doesn't record any audio. Speech recognition is done by your operating system.

How do I add a quote from the book?

Tap "Add a quote" on the "Quotes" tab. You can type the text or take a photo of the page and mark the passage; text recognition runs on your device and the photo is deleted afterwards.

What is the lexicon?

The lexicon holds what matters in a book: characters, places and terms in novels, key ideas and concepts in nonfiction, for example. For every entry Chapterkeep remembers the chapter it first appears in. You can see the relations between entries on the character map.

Does the recap spoil what happens next?

No. The recap, the character map and the recap of a series only show your own notes up to the chapter you're at. Whatever comes later stays hidden.

How do I mark important passages in a note?

Select the text in the note editor and tap "Mark as important". You find marked passages collected in the notebook and highlighted in the export.

Review and reading time

How do the flash cards work?

You can turn a lexicon entry, a quote or a selected passage of your notes into a flash card, or write one by hand. Under "Review" Chapterkeep quizzes you: what you know comes back less often, what you don't know yet more often (Leitner system).

How do I track my reading time?

Tap "I'm reading now" on the book page. The timer keeps running when you close the app. When you're done, you end the session, enter the chapter and can write or dictate a note right away.

Why don't I get any reminders?

Turn on the reminders in the settings and allow Chapterkeep to send notifications when the system asks. If you declined notifications before, the settings show a hint with a link to the system settings. Chapterkeep reminds you at most once a day.

Premium

What does Chapterkeep Premium include?

With Premium you export books as PDF or Markdown, see all cards of your reading year, use more designs with matching app icons and the widget for your home screen. Notes, lexicon, quotes, flash cards and sync are free.

I bought Premium, but it isn't active.

Sign in with the account you bought it with and tap "Restore purchases" on the Premium page. The same App Store or Google Play account as for the purchase has to be signed in on the device.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You manage subscriptions in your store: on the iPhone under Settings → your name → Subscriptions, on Android in Google Play under Profile → Payments & subscriptions. Premium stays active until the end of the paid period.

How do I change the design or the app icon?

In the settings under "Design". Without Premium you can try every design there.

Data and account

Who can read my notes?

Only you. Your books and notes are stored on your device and on servers in the EU and belong to your account. We don't sell them, don't analyze them and don't use them for advertising. Photos and voice recordings are not uploaded.

How do I delete my account?

In the settings under "Profile" → "Delete Account". This deletes all your data on our servers and on the device. Cancel a running subscription in your store as well.
